From:  Garren S. Cone, Legislative Trustee
If you all recall, I’ve mentioned at past Chapter meetings that “we” really can make a difference if “we” all speak as one to the issues that are important to us riders.  Well, the ‘rubber finally met the road’ on Florida Senate Bill 908 (Vulnerable Road User) legislation!  (read revised Bill here: http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2015/0908/BillText/Filed/PDF

While it isn’t the be all to end all, this Bill does shine a light on the importance of recognizing motorcycle riders deserve more attention than we’ve received in the past.  No, it does NOT make it a criminal offense to injure a vulnerable road user when improperly passing such, but it DOES finally recognize this scenario as a traffic infraction (A violation of subsection (1) is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318. If a violation of subsection (1) contributed to the bodily injury of a vulnerable user of a public right of way, the law enforcement officer issuing the citation for the violation shall note such information on the citation).  Yes, it IS a victory, albeit a small one.
If you are inclined to do so, you may want to phone the Bill’s sponsor, Senator Thad Altman, at (321) 868-2132.
